Happy Mother's Day

On Mother's Day the ladies
of the church wore carnations
pinned to their breasts
white if their mothers had died
red if they yet lived.
Today I wear white for
both mothers lost while
beneath my breast my heart
bleeds red.

Although several years have passed in one case, the missing has not faded and is still raw in the other.
grief has no expiration date.
